Leek Town 2 Imps 2

Leek Town 2 Imps 2

City Women scored a last gasp equaliser to ensure they took a share of the spoils in a 2-2 draw at Leek Town.

The home side started quickly and forced Lana Timson into an early stop when Chantelle Gallagher shot low and hard.

With that scare navigated, City started to dominate, and came within inches of taking the lead when Maddi Green’s free-kick was kept out by a combination of the ‘keeper and the crossbar.

Against the run of play Leek opened the scoring. A high ball into City’s box fell into the path of Alise Gindra, and the Latvian international swept her finish under the body of Timson.

The Imps fought back with Ella Thompson-Moulding hooking the ball just wide from just inside the box.

City had an even better opportunity on the cusp of half-time when Green picked out an excellent ball into Millie Quaintance, but the winger’s poked effort was gratefully clutched onto by the Leek shot-stopper.

After the break, the Imps were relentless in their pursuit of an equaliser, with Lucy Farrow denied on a couple of occasions following her introduction from the bench.

Farrow then thought she’d gone one better, but after taking the ball down well, she struck inches wide of the far post.

Town then nearly made City pay for their missed chances as their striker went through on goal, but a brilliantly timed challenge from Sinead Fletcher halted her progress.

In the 73rd minute the Imps levelled when Leek’s ‘keeper came striding out to meet Green on the edge of the area.

Green showed great composure to take a couple of touches before lobbing the ball into the vacated net.

City then pushed for a winner, with Cassie Steward seeing a couple of efforts go over the crossbar.

But it looked as if Lee Mitchell’s side would go home with nothing when a superb strike from Emma Henderson in injury time put the hosts back ahead.

Yet, City did not let their heads drop and with seconds remaining on the clock Steward rose highest to nod home a corner on her debut and rescue a point for the Imps.
