Peterborough United 4 Imps 1

Peterborough United 4 Imps 1

City fell to a hard-fought defeat at the Weston Homes Stadium against Peterborough United on Wednesday evening.

The Imps initially took the lead early on through Lucy Farrow, but the Posh equalised on the stroke of half-time before scoring three more in the second half.

Four minutes in, the Imps broke forward through Jess Rousseau who looked to flash a shot towards the far post. Her effort took a deflection and span out for a corner however the following delivery was cleared by the home side.

Only a few minutes later, City were on target with Farrow sending the Imps into a 1-0 lead. Rousseau was once again involved as she played the ball into Farrow, who took one touch before firing into the far corner.

The hosts then had their first attempt on goal as Farrow brought down a Posh player on the edge of the 18 yard box. The resulting free-kick hit the crossbar before it was cleared by City's defence.

City pushed forward again as Chantelle Robinson went close having been played into the penalty area before firing towards the goal, but her effort was blocked.

Not long afterwards, Lauryn Wilcock almost added a second for the Imps as Leah Hardy played a long ball over the Posh defence which the winger got control of, but her effort was beaten away for a corner.

Steward had the chance to equalise for the hosts after she was sent behind the City defence and found herself alone with Poppy Irvine, but her effort hit the crossbar before it was cleared by the Imps.

Just before half time, Peterborough were back on level terms. Aylmer´s cross into the box was met by Kirk who on the volley managed to lob Irvine for the equaliser.

Rousseau then earned a freekick 25 yards from the Posh goal after being brought down in the 51st minute. Hardy took aim, but her effort went narrowly over the crossbar.

Shortly afterwards, Hardy picked up the ball 30 yards out and fired towards goal, but Poshs’ Corry just about parried the ball over the bar.

One minute afterwards, Posh captain Perkins was the one to strike from range as Irvine saved at the expense of a corner. City were unable to clear the corner following a scramble in the area which is resulted in the home side taking the lead in the 56th minute.

In the 68th minute, Posh took a 3-1 lead as unmarked striker Steward received a pass in the box and her effort was tapped home.

Irvine rushed out to make a save in the 77th minute, before Fantom stood on the line and blocked Steward’s follow-up effort.

City’s last attempt arrived in the 86th minute as Amy Kay’s header struck the crossbar before Posh keeper Corry got control of the ball.

In the last minute, the home side made it 4-1. As Aylmer scored directly from a corner.
