Tom Bayliss was impressed with the character his side showed as the Imps recovered from conceding an early goal to beat Burton Albion 3-2 at the Pirelli Stadium.
The midfielder provided two assists to his team-mates on his debut for City following his summer move.
He said: “We started the first half really well, we were on the front foot and their goal came against the run of play.
“It shows what character we have to respond as quickly as we did. We then made it 2-1 which I thought we thoroughly deserved.
“To come back and get three points away from home on the first game of the season - I don’t think anyone could ask for any more.”
Bayliss was pleased to get back into competitive action after the Imps enjoyed a productive pre-season programme.
He continued: “You can play all the pre-season games you want but there’s nothing like league football.
“You could see the first half was frantic and high-energy, but in the second half we managed to game quite well, especially when we went back into the lead.”
City’s number eight thanked the fans, noting how loud their support was from start to finish.
He added: “The support was unbelievable - even when we came out to warm-up the reception we got was crazy.
“Hopefully the supporters will keep that up all season and I’m happy we could send them home with a smile on their faces.”
