Skubala reflects on Vertu Trophy progress

City head coach Michael Skubala applauds the travelling fans after the win at Morecambe

City head coach Michael Skubala was naturally happy to see his side reach the final 16 of the Vertu Trophy with a 1-0 win at Morecambe on Tuesday night.

Bailey Cadamarteri scored the decisive goal in the first-half, as his header sealed progression for the Imps.

Skubala said: "Getting through was the main objective and we knew it would be a tough game. The pitch was really heavy as well, which took a lot out of the lads, but in the end it was a really good job getting through.

"Another good thing is we managed to get some minutes into players who we're going to need.

"We know if we don't concede we can come up with a moment of quality to win a game and there were some really good performances. We're pleased to get into the next round."

JJ McKiernan came off injured in the opening period. Skubala said: "He's not having much luck at the moment. He's pulled his calf and we had to make a call to get him off the pitch so as not to cause any more damage. We've got to get him patched up and see how he is."

Tom Bayliss and Tyler Walker returned to action as substitutes during the second-half following injury lay-offs.

Skubala added: "It was good to get those minutes into both of them. We didn't overstretch them but it was good to see both back on the pitch and get them going again."
