Michael Skubala was pleased with the physical returns and the tactical understanding his side showed as the Imps rounded off their pre-season tour in Spain with a 1-0 victory against Preston North End.
Jovon Makama’s goal in the second minute was ultimately the difference between the two sides as both teams got valuable minutes into their legs.
Skubala said: “It was great to see what they could transfer from training and how well they take things on, because you can train as much as you want, you need to go up against opposition.
“We got what we wanted from it - a bit of a workout, a bit of learning, and we move into the next busy week.”
City’s head coach has found the time out in Spain extremely helpful as he continues to ingrain his ideas into his group of players.
He continued: “Spain has been really important. It’s about connecting as a team on the pitch, it’s about getting our ideas of how we want to play across to the players in a really intense, immersive way.
“We’ve had big meetings, and we're ready to work, and ready to plan. The tour has allowed us to develop the principles of the players in how we want to play. It’s been a great week.”
Skubala also gave mention to the return of Lewis Montsma who was substituted on in the second half to mark his return to action following a lengthy injury lay-off.
The head coach continued: “What Lewis has gone through is painful. Just to see him back out there with a smile when he’s training is why we do it.
“Everyone knows his quality; we’ve just got to try and look after him and give him the best opportunity to get back into first-team football. So far, so good, he’s been fantastic.”
