Head coach Michael Skubala hailed his team's grit and determination as they emerged 3-2 victors at Burton Albion on the first day of the Sky Bet League One season.

Two goals from skipper Paudie O'Connor, in addition to an effort from Tendayi Darikwa, fired City to an impressive three points in an entertaining clash at the Pirelli Stadium.

He said: "I think the first game of the season is always tricky. The players obviously get used to it being the real stuff now and not quite like pre-season.

"I thought we started the game brilliantly, were on top and lively. We got caught (for Burton's first goal) but we started the game how we want to play for 30 minutes. They then started to get back into the game.

"In the second half we had three or four big transition moments and just weren't sharp enough, but in the end it's about getting three points.

"The skipper was amazing with his two goals and a brilliant leadership performance.

"At times we had to dig it out, but ultimately we're pleased with a win away from home."

He concluded: "It was a tough performance and we still have lots of growing to do in terms of improving. Their effort was amazing and I still think there's more to come from this group. I loved their desire to win the game.

"We had to grind it but sometimes those are so good for the group because we know we can get better. We look to next week now, starting with the Harrogate game (in the Carabao Cup), and will try and get this wagon rolling."
