Match preview | Imps vs Chesterfield

preview chesterfield

The Imps will begin their Bristol Street Motors Trophy campaign by hosting Chesterfield at the LNER Stadium in Group G (7pm KO).

Read the thoughts of both head coach Michael Skubala and defender Tom Hamer as well as important match information in this preview pack.

Michael Skubala’s thoughts:

“I want to win the game first and foremost. The cup games are a really good opportunity for the club to try and go further in a competition - especially this one. It’s a chance to get to Wembley, so I want to win the game.

“We’ll put a team on the pitch that we think is competitive. There will be a few changes of course, but it’s not that we’re changing to give people minutes. Obviously we’ll look at some players, but first and foremost our objective is to win the game of football.

“We want to take the competition very seriously and get onto the right foot and give ourselves a foothold in the group which is important. Ultimately we have to get the balance of the team right.”

Tom Hamer’s take:

“Clean sheets are what wins you games, if you keep a clean sheet you can’t lose the game. On Saturday it wasn’t just the defenders that came on that made an impact, JJ came on and won the penalty, and you look at Jack Moylan who’s been on the bench a few times, he got his chance and he scored the winner.

“The bench is just as important as the starting XI, even the lads that aren’t in the squad play a role - it’s all about team spirit and building as a squad.

“If I get the chance to play I’m looking forward to the chance to showcase what I can do, and it’s an opportunity to show the manager what I can do in a view of hopefully putting myself in contention for being selected for the league games.”

A look at the opposition:

In their first season back in the EFL Chesterfield have gotten off to a bright start with a 5-0 away win at Crewe Alexandra catching the eye.

They did suffer their first defeat of the league season in their last outing however as they narrowly lost 1-0 at Gillingham.

An own goal coupled with a strike from Michael Bostwick gave the Imps a 2-1 victory when the Spireites last visited the LNER Stadium in 2017.

EFL veteran Will Grigg has been leading the line for Chesterfield this season, and City will need to be wary of the threat that the 33-year-old will pose.

Match information:

Ruebyn Ricardo will be the man leading the team of officials on Tuesday night with Daniel Smith and Adam Burgess acting as his assistants. Abbas Khan will operate as the fourth official.
