Match preview | Imps vs Charlton Athletic

Charlton Athletic preview

The Imps will aim to get back to winning ways when they welcome Charlton Athletic to the LNER Stadium on Saturday 7 December (12.30pm KO).

Read what head coach Michael Skubala and wing-back Dom Jefferies had to say ahead of the fixture, while catching up on important match information in this preview.

Skubala’s thoughts:

“The only thing that gets us out of this run of form is graft and work. It’s not like we’re struggling in all phases of the game, we dominated for long periods on Tuesday night and created a lot of chances. We’ve just got to defend better at certain moments, and be more clinical in both boxes. There’s lots and lots of improvements being made but we’re just not getting the three points at the moment.

“My job is to be calm when we’re up and when we’re down. I said at the start of the year we’re doing really well but we’ve got loads to improve on. All teams go through blips, and if they don’t they’re probably like Wycombe who are flying. This is a tough league and it’s going to be a tough season, and we’ve just got to keep doing what we’re doing and keep improving and moving forward. We need to keep trusting the process and keep working hard on the training pitch. You win and lose nothing in November, you’ve got to keep with it and by the time we get to the second part of the season we’ll see where we are.

“Charlton are another big team who invest a lot, they have a good manager and good players who will hope to be higher in the league than they are. They’re going to be aggressive, front-footed, and hard to play against. We’ve got to be on it because they’re going to ask us questions in our box. We have to take the game to them, we’re at home and want to perform and go after the three points as always.”

Jefferies’ take:

“There were plenty of chances for us in the game and it’s good that we’re getting those chances and creating opportunities. It shows we’re working together as a team, we just need to put more of them away and be more clinical.

“We want to win every game we play. In the league we’re doing the right things and getting the opportunities to win games, we just need to take our chances and I’m sure the points will come.

“Every game in this league is difficult, but our main focus is setting out our game plan and getting the three points. We’ve got a structure and we know what we need to do, every game’s different of course, but we’ve just got to plan the best we can and hope we get the result we want.”

A look at the opposition:

Charlton currently find themselves in mid-table sitting 13th after 17 games, collating 22 points.

The Addicks, under the stewardship of Nathan Jones, have had a few stand-out victories, beating the likes of Birmingham City and Bolton Wanderers at the Valley.

Results haven’t been going their way as of late however, having tasted defeat in three of their last four matches.

Their most recent loss came at the hands of Crawley Town who walked away from south-east London with all three points.

The Imps’ last home match against Charlton was a memorable one as supporters roared Tom Shaw’s City side on to a 3-1 win under the LNER Stadium lights.
