The Foundation’s Fighting Fit programme which supports people living with cancer has expanded further to reach more individuals across Lincolnshire, with delivery sites now in Lincoln, Gainsborough, Boston, Grantham and Mablethorpe.
Fighting Fit sessions focus on low impact fitness designed to build back balance, posture, strength, and flexibility, and are led by a Level 4 qualified coach in cancer & exercise rehabilitation. Group sessions also allow individuals to connect with people with shared experiences, gain peer to peer support and enhance their mental wellbeing.
The expansion of Fighting Fit has been supported by the successful collaboration between the Foundation and several local delivery partners, including Everyone Active, Leisure SK and Boston United Community Foundation.
A participant from the Fighting Fit programme emphasised the impact of the sessions. They said: “After I had finished my chemotherapy and had my surgery, I didn't have any energy, it took me 3/4 attempts to make my meals as I had to keep sitting down to rest, since attending Fighting Fit I have so much more energy. Fighting Fit has helped me both physically and mentally.”
Alice Carter, head of healthier communities at the Foundation, added: “Physical activity plays an integral role in helping individuals with both the physical and mental impacts of cancer treatment, and the expansion of Fighting Fit into new parts of Lincolnshire is therefore vitally important to ensure those living with cancer have access to support in their local area.”
Referrals into any of the Fighting Fit sessions can be made via a self-referral or a clinical pathway, and referral forms can be accessed via the Foundation website, by calling 07305108167 or emailing health@lincolncityfoundation.co.uk
