Mark Kennedy is happy to see his side finish top of Group E and progress into the Papa Johns Trophy knockout stages.
The Imps secured top spot and qualification on Tuesday evening with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Newcastle United U21.
He said: “I am pleased to get through to the knockout stages and win the group. We knew that Newcastle were going to try and play out, so it gave us the opportunity to press. Some of it was very good, so credit to the guys for that.
“There were definitely longer periods in the second half where we were able to control the game and that was a big positive for us.”
Kennedy also highlighted that it was a successful night for the younger Imps who all played their part in the victory at the LNER Stadium.
He continued: “Freddie Draper deserved his goal because he has trained hard and has asked us to give him an opportunity when it arrives. He has had a really tough time with injuries and I was delighted to see him celebrate in the way he did.
“I also thought that Elicha Ahui was outstanding and the best player on the pitch. It was his decision making that really impressed me. I was really pleased with the young guys tonight, especially Oisin Gallagher who came off the bench.”
