Following his Man of the Match performance against Accrington Stanley on Tuesday evening, City winger Charles Vernam has stressed the importance of having the correct mindset after biding his time to break into the starting XI.
The Lincolnshire-born forward joined the Imps in the summer and whilst gametime has been somewhat limited since his arrival, he says his impressive performance is due to consistently implementing a positive mindset.
He said: “You’re always frustrated when you’re not playing but I’ve tried to be as supportive as I can to the group because they’ve been playing really well. It’s very easy to be down about it but equally, we are all part of a team and something bigger so it’s important to be there for the lads and train hard and be ready for your opportunity.
“I’ve been in the game long enough to understand opportunities come when you least expect them so you’ve always got to be prepared and ready – luckily I was and managed to put in a good performance and hopefully that can continue.”
City’s number seven insists this mindset is shared amongst the squad, with the Imps switching their focus to Saturday as they aim to progress through the first round of the Emirates FA Cup.
Vernam added: “We are eager to get back on track now and try to back Tuesday’s performance up with progression in another cup competition.
“We will go into the game with the same mindset we tackle league games with. I know everyone says that but we will genuinely go there fully focussed with the intent of implementing our style of play and hopefully getting the win.”
