Alex Palmer was delighted after playing his part in the penalty shoot-out which brought The Imps victory this evening against Scunthorpe United.

Going into the shootout after the game finished 1-1, the imposing figure of the City ‘keeper saved from Myles Hippolyte to put the game in the hands of The Imps and two confidently struck penalties later from Anthony Scully and James Jones, the win went the way of City.

However, the goalkeeper was quick to play down the victory concentrating his thinking on getting straight to work on eradicating any opportunity for the opposition, when he gets back on the training ground.

“No one wants to concede from set plays but it happens and we can work on it in training.

We need to start better and take our chances and move the ball a bit quicker and I think we shot ourselves in the foot a bit but we understand we can go again and do the things the gaffer wants us to do better, on Saturday.”

Alex praised the impact of Jorge Grant after he came on in the second half to help The Imps get back into the game, but Alex also heaped praise on the backroom staff who have worked hard to ensure the players are fit from first whistle to last.

“It was said on Saturday that we looked sharp and fit, so I have to take my hat off to the sports science and medicine team here. It’s a great asset to have, they’ve been working really hard.

“Jorge is an experienced player, he picks the right passes, he’s patient on the ball with a guy like him in the midfield we’re going to be a better team with him in the side.”

After making a crucial save in the shootout, Alex played down his role in the win and focussed on picking up more victories to put in the foundations for the season ahead.

“I don’t mind penalties, it’s sort of like the pressure’s off really. It’s 50/50, you either save it or you don’t. They hit the post with their first one and I saved the other one, but the lads did their job by sticking it in the net.

“Winning is always the goal, the gaffer has said let’s have a run in as many cup competitions as we can. It gives us a winning platform and that’s always a good base to build on.”
