Jamie McCombe has thanked the Lincoln City supporters for their impressive support today as the Imps suffered defeat at home to Oxford United.
The 36-year-old described the result as one of the hardest in his career before going onto praise the City fans who showed outstanding support throughout the 90 minutes.
“We owe the fans far more than what we gave them today,” said McCombe.
“It is probably the hardest day I have had in football, I am bitterly disappointed. The only positive to come out of today was the fans, they were excellent.
“We want to thank our fans because we will need them.”
The Imps defender continued by discussing Lincoln’s performance saying: “We will now go and look at ourselves, but today was significantly below par for us.
“I was embarrassed on the side because they were singing our names and they stuck with us until the end.
“We didn’t deserve the support we had today because they have always been excellent to us and today they were outstanding.”
Imps defender Cian Bolger also spoke to press following today’s result, explaining how City’s performance was not acceptable.
“We wanted to go out and impress today, but we didn’t do that at all and it was unacceptable,” explained Bolger.
“All we can do is thank the fans who stuck with us right until the very end, we have let everyone down today and can only thank our fans.
“There is probably not much else to say apart from that it wasn’t acceptable, I think Macca (Jamie McCombe) and the backroom staff have worked tirelessly for the last few weeks and we let them down today.”
