After scoring the final goal in the win over Peterborough United last night, Matt Green was delighted to progress into the Semi Final of the Checkatrade Trophy.

Of course, it means City are now one game from Wembley, but Green was quick to point to the win being a perfect example of the unity and belief that flows through everyone at the club.

“We dug in against a League One team, we knew we were the underdogs to a certain extend and of course we went behind too, which is always tough. But it shows the resilience and determination in the group that the gaffer has instilled in all of us.”

“We work really hard in training, it pays off on nights like that. We were still sprinting at full pace in the 94th minute, we were still full of beans. I didn’t feel too bad, I made quite a few sprints, the game was quite open but I knew I would get a chance and fortunately I took it.”

With supporters now talking about the possibility of a first ever visit to Wembley for The Imps, Green says it’s hard not to think about it although the players are not getting ahead of themselves. The striker is just looking forward to the thought of potentially getting back out onto the field against Newport County at Sincil Bank next week.

“Of course you have your eye on it, it’s exciting, I can’t imagine how many Imps’ fans would be there, it feels like we’d almost need two Wembleys! It’s a great opportunity and would be a great occasion for everyone. The atmosphere here is superb, our fans are great away as well as we saw at Barnet.

“Every time I play I can’t wait to play in front of such a big and loyal crowd and I’m really enjoying my football.”

Tickets are on sale for the Newport County game on Tuesday 30th January, and the Stacey West Stand is also open for Home supporters. You can buy tickets for the game HERE or directly from the Ticket Office at Sincil Bank Stadium.
