City safely through to the last four of The Buildbase FA Trophy...
As expected there were numerous changes to the City starting line-up for this Buildbase FA Trophy Quarter Final tie at Boreham Wood.On a breezy, damp and chilly afternoon, the Imps dominated the opening stages with the hosts camped in their own half for the first quarter of an hour; Joe Ward coming the closest to breaking the deadlock with his 12th minute volley being superbly kept out by home 'keeper Grant Smith.
City had a let off in the 24th minute when the home side's first real attack saw Angelo Balanta strike the foot of the post whilst at the other end Whitehouse had a long-range effort kept out by Smith before a Boreham Wood attack saw Morgan Ferrier and Anthony Jeffrey combine before the latter fired wide.
After the break Elliott Whitehouse blazed over but in the 62nd minute Ward produced a splendid finish, cutting in from the right before drilling home left-footed to put the Imps in front.
Alan Power replaced Billy Knott for his 250th City appearance and Josh Ginnelly came on for Terry Hawkridge as the Imps looked for a second and it duly arrived in the 73rd minute when a Sam Habergham corner was inadvertently headed into his own net by Matt Paine.
The two-goal cushion saw City dominate the closing stages with Dayle Southwell, on in place of Jack Muldoon for the last 10 minutes, capitalising on a Smith slip before teeing up Ginnelly who saw his goalbound drive tipped behind by the recovering keeper.
The result was never in doubt as the Imps extended their winning run to seven matches in all competitions. Next up in this competition is a two-legged semi-final with the games to be played on Tuesday 14th and Saturday 18th March 2017.
